This page is about my Mother's school years, for the book I am working on about her. Mom was an earnest student and took her schooling responsibilities seriously. She was the 9th child in a family of 10 born to Polish immigrants, and the first child to complete High School and graduate. She was lucky enough to be allowed to go all the way to school because there were no jobs available.
The opposite page of this layout includes journaling, which I took from my Mother's notes, and they read:
Who can ever forget the clang of the school bell, the warped floors, the cloakrooms, creaky stairs, charts and maps and slate covered walls! The desks with built in inkwells with the wonderful bakelite covers!!
At Liberty St. school the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic were taught by one teacher in the same classroom. We learned to print from the charts on the walls, and we practiced cursive writing ( the Palmer Method) every day too. Once a week a music teacher and an art teacher helped further our artistic talents. Close friendships were formed during our grammar school days, and we enjoyed recess and playtimes together!
After grade 6 we were promoted to Jr. High, where many changes boggled the mind! We had a different teacher and a different classroom for every subject. Six class periods each day began and ended with a loud buzzer!! Old friends were separated and new friendships formed. Gym class replaced recess. Somehow we survived this initial confusion and settled down to a daily routine.
As I advanced to High School I could pursue either an Academic course of study or a Business one. I chose the Academic course. Some of my classes were History, Geography, English Literature, Biology, Algebra and German. We had tons of homework!!!
All sports and clubs were extracurricular and attended after school hours. My days were filled with lots of activities - Press Club, Speech Arts, Junior Prize Speaking, Newspaper staff, Library Club, Camera Club, and Senior Play. I loved my musical activities, Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Glee Club. Music was vital and important to me. I also enjoyed sports, mainly basketball and bowling, but I was an avid tennis player who developed a reputation as a fierce competitor!!
The climb up the academic ladder became increasingly difficult!! Would we ever graduate??! It was 'the best of times and the worst of times" that led to my final reward - Graduation!!!!!
Included on this layout is one of my Mom's favorite old bookmarks. She really was quite the student and would have excelled if she had been able to attend college, but of course it was out of the question because of financial constraints.
