Ask any Mom what she’d like MOST for the holidays, and she’s likely to say something along the lines of “Calgon, take me away!” A little time to pamper and primp is hard to come by with little ones underfoot (or big ones in the way!). Plus, let’s face it – a girls’ day at a Spa is a luxury that few of us can truly afford. So why not give the gift of self-care to one of the women that you love? It’s simple and thoughtful to put together a “DIY Spa” gift for a busy friend. Go ahead and make one for yourself, too – we won’t tell!

Scrub Away Stress

Taking the time to use an all-over body scrub is one of the most pampering rituals in a spa experience. It’s amazing how revitalized and refreshed a scrub makes you feel! Scrubs are also super simple to make at home – so they are perfect for gift-giving. Here are several combinations that you can try –

Brown Sugar Scrub
Combine ½ cup brown sugar with ¼ cup almond oil, ¼ cup gentle liquid soap, and ¼ tsp vanilla. Mix well.

Sugar Scrub
Combine ½ cup white sugar with 1/3 cup olive oil. If desired, add a few drops of lavender essential oil.

Salt Scrub
Combine ½ cup sea salt with ¼ cup grapeseed oil. After mixing, squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into jar. Mix well.

Soften Rough Edges

A simple and effective moisturizer can help to smooth and soften rough heels, elbows, and hands. My favorite DIY skin soften is coconut oil. It’s solid at room temperature, which makes it mess-free to scoop out of a small jar. Combine with a bit of almond oil or vanilla extract for scent (although I enjoy the slight coconut aroma!).

You can also experiment with combining coconut oil with other moisturizers. Heat the coconut oil gently until it is liquid. Mix in avocado oil, almond oil, olive oil, or walnut oil. Pour into jars and let cool.

Tip – sweet almond oil is available at some natural foods stores, and through online retailers. Avocado, Olive, and Walnut oil are usually available in larger grocery stores.

Cast a Gentle Glow

One of my favorite ways to turn my bathroom into a mini-spa is to light small candles. The soft glow of candlelight makes me less likely to focus on imperfections and more likely to sink into a bubble bath. Add a few scented votives to your spa gift basket to add just the right ambiance to your gift.

Wrap up in Softness

Something as simple as a new fluffy white towel is an indulgence that many Moms don’t give to themselves. Consider adding soft towels, a tube pillow, or new fluffy slippers to your spa gift. Your gift doesn’t need to be extravagant to be luxurious!

Create the Ultimate Pampering Collection

Complete your spa gift with the simple gift of time – create coupons for babysitting to give your friend the utmost in self-care….alone time! Other additions to your gift might include a CD of calming music, a fun new romance novel, or a mini bottle of wine. Put everything in a pretty gift bag and know that you’ve given a pampering gift that will really be treasured.
