This was a page I did for a challenge. The challenge was to do a tribute page to someone/thing in your life. We were supposed to do a collage and make it look vintage. I also had to do some color washing. I used food color and walnut ink and washed most of my PP squares.

The Journaling is hidden and done in an accordion in the square that has open on it:

It seems too often there is someone in our lives that we take for granted. No matter how important they are to us, we tend to assume they will always be there. This is the case with my grandmother, who has been a constant in my life. She had a stroke about a year and a half ago, and it is a shame that it took this medical emergency for me to evaluate her importance.
My grandma turns 80 years young this June. I say young because she most certainly doesn’t seem her age. She is always busy doing tons of things, and when you call her to make plans to visit she actually has to check her social calendar. From volunteer work, going to luncheons with the other ladies, their weekly couples card game, to driving others who can’t to doctors’ appointments, she is one of the busiest people I know.
My grandma had three sons with my dad being the oldest. She has four grandchildren, including me. Her and my grandfather lived on a farm in Western PA for more than 50 years, until last year when they built a smaller “retirement” home. In addition to being a mother and grandmother, she was a nurse and had a college degree. Both of my grandparents had jobs and worked on the farm in their time off.
My grandma is a really hard worker. She plants a giant garden each year, and freezes and cans lots of fruits and vegetable. She has the cleanest house of anyone I know and is the best cook. Everything she serves is homemade, except for the mini pickles which I just found out are not canned by her but store bought. You name it and she can do it.
The year before last on Christmas Day, she had a stroke. Thank god it was only a mild stroke with no permanent damage. It just had an eye-opening effect on me. My grandma has always been healthy and active. To see her lying in a hospital bed made me realize I take for granted that she has always been in my life. I thought about how important she was to my entire family, me included. She is the glue that holds our family together. Every Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are always celebrated at her house. There are also cookouts and birthday parties in between those holidays. She keeps in touch with all of us and updated on what’s going on in the family. She remembers your birthday every year, and no birthday is complete without her calling and singing you Happy Birthday over the phone.
I used to have an on going argument with my roommate in college. We were in our dorm room one day and after she got off the phone with her grandmother, she told me she had the best grandma in the whole world. I promptly told her that that was not possible as my grandma was the best grandma in the whole entire world. She started naming things her grandma was good at. I would then tell her how my grandmother was an expert seamstress, the best cook in the world, and played piano in church. We went back and forth naming all of our grandmothers’ attributes. Even though we jokingly around had this argument, we were both serious about our grandmother being the best.
I hope one day if I have grandchildren, I will be as fantastic as my grandma. I really wish it hadn’t taken a stroke for me to realize how important she is. My grandma is one of the most special people I know and the best grandma in the whole world.
