This is string art created by my Uncle, Ernie. He has Polio at the age of three and lost the muscle in his legs, shoulders, and some of his hands. The disease also affected his lungs. He created string art with the help of my grandfather, a carpenter. Grandpa cut the boards, Uncle Ernie, glued the felt onto the boards, nailed the nails and did the string art designs. He sold these pieces all over Missouri and earned enough profit to pay for a full-size van with a wheelchair lift and hand controls. He was out in his power wheelchair in 2009 and was hit by a pickup truck as he crossed a driveway on a sidewalk. The impact broke his femur. As a result of the break and being in bed on his back he developed pneumonia and died. I've done several LOs about him, one using his ribbon bird pins and another using his counted cross stitch work. He made many differenet patterns. His work was pretty popular in the 70s and he took orders from folk around the US. Maybe even YOU had a piece by him. I own the one the middle, my daughters have butterflies, and my husband has Star Ship Enterprise. My folks have praying hands and a beautiful sailing ship.
