We walked a block from the port to see a statue of St. Peter and St. Paul. A large, low metal horseshoe-shaped railing ran in a semi-circle behind the statue along the water. From across the street we could see items completely covering the railing but couldn't tell what was packed on nearly every inch of the metal railing!

We were surprised when upon closer inspection to find out that they were padlocks – thousands of padlocks from simple locks to very elaborately painted locks with names and dates. Then we learned about the local tradition. When a couple gets married they bring a padlock and place it on this railing and then toss the key as far out as possible into the waters. As long as the key is not found and the lock is not opened, the couple will stay married.
