Saturday, October 15th, 2011 – Cruise Day 18 – We couldn't wait to hit the ground running this morning! We were in the port of Tianjin, China – the port city for Beijing and it was an overnight port. I thought we were going to tour Tianjin and then go back to the ship to spend the night. But Bill had a wonderful surprise for me – he wanted to take me to Beijing to spend the night and then to climb the Great Wall of China the next day! I did not expect this; it isn't like Bill to pay for a hotel when the room on this ship is already paid for.
We took a 30-minute taxi ride to the train station, and then we took the fast-speed train to Beijing. The train was so comfortable and it was immaculate. There was a light-up board in the front of our train car which constantly gave the time, temperature outside and speed we were traveling. For most of the trip we maintained a speed of 295 kilometers which is between 180-200 miles per hour! What fun! No wonder we were on the train just under an hour to get all the way to Beijing!
Then we took the subway to Tiananmen Square and looked around a bit. We found a hotel very close to Tiananmen Square, and checked in. It was strange for me to be checking in with no suitcase, clothes or anything with us but staying overnight was a surprise so I didn't pack anything. I was quite pleased our room came with 2 complimentary toothbrushes, toothpaste, a comb and even disposable slippers. And we would be fine in the same clothes for another day. At least we each had clean underwear in Bill's backpack!
The Port of Tianjin (Tianjin Gang, Chinese: 天津港) is the largest port in Northern China and the main maritime gateway to Beijing.
