Project Life Week 12 Insert: We couldn’t believe that a March 23rd could be so sunny and gorgeous so we decided to take this opportunity and get out of the house for a while. As soon as we walked out the door Sweets knew exactly what we were going to do and got tail-wagging excited…she knew we were taking a family hike! We hit the trail and began following its wending way into the woods. Sweets raced ahead of us, both on the trail itself and sometimes amongst the trees, chasing butterflies, shadows, leaves; pretty much anything that caught her attention. David found a good sized stick along the way and decided it would make a really good hiking aide. I think he also thought it would make him look a little more like an outdoorsman too. Rugged outdoorsmen always wear shorts and tennis shoes when they travel the woods, right baby?  We finally made it to our favorite spot in our woodland travels when we reached the shores of the lake tucked a little over a mile back into the hills. We love its picturesque setting and the peacefulness of nature while Sweets just loves that she can go swimming! As Sweets frolicked in the water we heard a series of honks warning us that someone else had taken notice of our arrival at the lake. Sure enough, the geese began to arrive. One, two, three, eight, ten…can you believe fifteen geese came down to keep an eye on us! Sweets thought they might have come down to play so she ran up and down the shore and leapt into the water to show them she loved playing but all they did was honk at her. David and I scanned the lake entire and counted almost thirty geese in total but the ones guarding Sweets were the biggest treat. They followed her every move to make sure she didn’t try anything funny. Sorry puppy, guess the geese aren’t ready to play with you just yet. We decided to let the geese go back to whatever geese do and head back to our own home. On the return hike we found several animal tracks in the mud of the trail. Deer, turkey and even raccoon make use of this little forested highway. Towards the end of our walk David decided to climb a slight rise he had seen in order to check out the sights. Sweets of course went with him (daddy’s girl) while I used the time to get some extra nature pictures. As I was preparing to get a beautiful shot of how the trees made the trail look like a hallway I heard a loud rustling from the woods and suddenly a deer bursts from the trees, leaps over the trail, and plunges back into the forest on the other side. It was incredible! Even more incredible though was that I actually got a picture of the deer in mid leap! You have to zoom a bit to see it but it was amazing. About a minute later David and Sweets arrive and I find out that I have my Sweets to thank for that incredible picture since she was chasing the deer! David thinks she’s a bad dog for running after the deer while I myself think she’s earned a little dog treat when we get home. I love how even a little walk in the woods can turn into a mini-adventure for the Lamp family.
