The Storm

One Spring day, my life was changed forever. I remember it, like it was yesterday. It was on a Friday afternoon, and it was very warm for that time of year. All of the neighborhood children were playing outside, when around 6:00 in the evening, the sky turned a very strange color. We all noticed it, because the clouds were an orange/yellowish color. I remember looking at the clouds in amazement, because I thought they were so pretty. Little did I know, that a tornado was approaching.

My father was at work that day, because he worked the 3-11 shift. I heard my mother calling for me and my sisters to come inside. In a matter of minutes, it grew very dark outside, almost like night. I remember sitting in my bedroom looking out the window, and I was again amazed by what I was seeing. The wind had picked up and it was raining a little, but the wind was so strong, it bent the trees over, and everything that was not secured down, was flying all over. Our next door neighbor called my Mom to tell her that a tornado was approaching, and that we need to take cover.

We didn't have a basement to go to, but only a tiny opening in the floor that lead us to the crawlspace under our house. My dad had cut out that opening in the floor and dug out enough dirt by hand, to create a safe place for us to go during a storm. My mom had gathered my younger sisters to the entrance of the crawlspace and was calling for me to come, but I could not move from my window. I don't know if I was in awe of what I was seeing, or just too scared to move, but my mom had to come get me and drag me away from the window in my bedroom and take me to the crawlspace. We all went under the house, crying and scared, until the storm passed. Ever since then, I have had a great fear of storms, especially tornadoes.

I suppose I will never overcome my fear of storms, but I am very thankful that I live in a house with a basement. Our basement is not very big or finished nicely---just concrete walls and floor, but it is my safe place. My husband knows my fear of storms, and he is always prepared with a weather radio, phone, flashlights, etc. He is a good christian man, my provider and protector, and the one who calms my fears during severe weather. And when it come to the "storms of life" as I call them, my husband and I have everything we need to be safe....God in our hearts, a Bible in our hand, and a gun in the dresser drawer.
