When Mr. Carter announced in the Spring of 2001, that our theme for our fall marching show would be “A Salute to the Greatest Generation“, we were very excited. The show promised to be a fabulous tribute to the soldiers who fought for our freedom during World War II. At that time, we could have never imagined just how much that show would mean not only to us, but to our entire community as well.

Drew, you all worked so hard during band camp, and the four weeks afterwards, trying to learn all of the extremely difficult music and drills. Then came September 11, 2001, and our world was changed forever. You and your classmates had only read of the horrors of war in your text books, but now, you had witnessed our nation being attacked on our soil, for the first time since Pearl Harbor. All of our hearts were broken by this terrible tragedy. From the depths of adversity, came strong will and determination. All of you worked hour after hour, perfecting your program. During each performance, everyone in the stands would rise, tears streaming down their faces. It became a time of healing.

We were so proud when our band won the Peach State Grand Championship in October, after a flawless performance. At that point, you were saluting not only the greatest generation, but the brave men and women who would soon be called to once again defend our freedom.

God Bless America!
