Journaling:
Thank you for treating me so kindly, for no heart in all the world was more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Thank you for not breaking my spirit with a stick, for though I would have licked your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding more quickly taught me the things you would have me do.

Thank you for speaking to me often, for your voice was the world’s sweetest music, as you must have know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep fell upon my waiting ear.

Thank you for taking me inside when it was cold and wet, for I was a domesticated animal, no longer used to the bitter elements. I asked no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet, though if you had no home, I would have followed you through ice and snow rather than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in the land. For you were my gods and I was your devoted worshiper.

Thank you for keeping my bowl filled with fresh water, for I could not tell you when I suffered of thirst. Thank you for feeding me clean, good food, that I could stay well. Thank you for letting me romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing, and able to protect you with my life, should you ever have been in danger.

And, my beloved masters, now that the Great Master has seen fit to deprive me of my health, thank you for not turning away from me. Rather, you held me gently in your arms as skilled hands granted me the merciful boon of eternal rest. I have left you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.
