This is one of Bill's favorite pages because he likes the photos of us riding in the cab.
The Sleeping Buddha (lower left) is so huge that you can hardly see me in the lower left corner of the page but he took a picture of me standing there so the picture will show how large the statue actually is. I look like an ant next to it. Good thing I'm wearing a bright pink and purple muumuu or you wouldn't see me at all!
Here's the journaling: We hired a private cab for 3 hours and our first stop was at the Long Son Pagoda which is marked by a huge white 79 foot tall Sitting Buddha statue. We could see the head of the statue above the tree-tops on the mountain and were anxious to get a closer look.
This beautiful temple pays tribute to the lives and tragic deaths of the monks and nuns who so dramatically emolliated themselves as a protest against the Vietnam War. It is a reminder of the tragedies of Vietnam which ended with the reunification of the country just 30 years ago.
From the courtyard outside the pagoda there are 152 stone steps (uneven stone steps) to climb to reach the Big Sitting Buddha. I was game to try it and Bill is always good for long walks with lots of stairs. About half-way up we found the giant Sleeping Buddha statue. I was amazed at the size of the Sleeping Buddha!
My knees were starting to hurt and I already had a long walk back down to the pagoda and then still had to walk to the courtyard to get to our cab which was waiting for us. I told Bill to go up to the see the Big Buddha if he wanted but I'd climbed enough stairs and was going back down. He was not that interested in climbing stairs to the top, since we could see the Big Buddha just fine from the ground.
