Monday, November 7th, 2011 – A very quiet day at sea. The captain announced that the seas were going to get a bit rough and they did. Not as bad as the seas on the way to Russia though, but bad enough.

We skipped formal night again; I wore my silver lame dress but we went to the lido for our crab legs. I didn't feel like fussing with my hair and makeup to go to the main dining room.

The after-dinner show was great – it was the second night of Davie Howes and he is very entertaining. He sings, plays the piano Jerry Lee Lewis-style and is amazing playing the trumpet, coronet or any kind of bugle. He even played “When the Saints Go Marching In” using the microphone stand, a vacuum cleaner hose, a garden hose and a shower hose as instruments. He is a remarkable talent and funny too!

I didn't expect another gift for each of us from the staff and crew so soon, but there were presents for us on the foot of our bed with the towel penguin and chocolates.

The card reads, “For those harder to distinguish bits of text or handy work, you will find this set of two Mighty Bright Flexi-Thin Magnifiers ideal paraphernalia for your onward ‘explorations'.

The wallet size unit is ideal to take with you ashore and can easily be placed in your key card holder or travel wallet. The bookmark speaks for itself and for those guests in possession of a digital reader will even be able to ‘superimpose' text like never before!

Either way, yet another practical gift from the staff and crew of the ms Amesterdam.”

At 3:50AM the emergency alarm went off and an announcement said that a fire had been detected in the incinerator room. We packed all our valuables in Bill's backpack along with my Gypsy (hand-held die-cut computer), our iPhones, Bill's binoculars, all Bill's prescription meds, my flash drives with all our cruise pictures and a few misc. items. Then we went to our muster station. After about 20 minutes the Captain announced that the fire was out and gave the all-clear for everyone to go back to their cabins.
