1/2 of a two pager. Journaling: City of Contrast

The capitol of Nicaragua has a population of 2,200,000 and some of the richest and poorest of her people. The downtown area was destroyed by an earthquake in 1972 and has not been rebuilt. There are beautiful North American style malls and acres of tin and tarp shanties. Because of the contrast of living conditions (sometimes right next to each other) a clear description is difficult.

Electricity and water are available, many places having indoor plumbing. The main roads are in excellent condition. Public transportation is excellent and affordable.

The country has socialized medicine and modern health care facilities.
