Journaling: These pictures were taken from the bus on our way to San Carlos. Since the windows were tinted, taking a shot required opening the window and getting the camera in an accessible spot. Many times we were well past the subject before I could oriented to get the photo. Although there were many interesting things to see, there aren’t many pictures.
San Carlos is quite a distance from Managua, 294 km and there are no express buses. The road follows the eastern shore of Lake Nicaragua. The bus stopped frequently with the longest stretch of movement being about ½ hour. There were no restroom breaks, seven hours was a long ride.
Vendors regularly hopped on board selling food which was tasty and cheap. There was one salesman that gave a lengthy pitch selling everything from sewing kits to Learn English pamphlets.
There is no road from San Carlos to the Pacific Coast so the reverse trip follows the same route back. There are ferries that cross the lake, but that takes 19 hours and we were out of time by this point.
We took a ferry from El Castillo at dawn taking about 1 ½ hours to return to San Carlos. It was a beautiful ride and well worth getting up that early. The bus back to Managua left at 9:00 a.m. Another seven hours later, we immediately hopped into a taxi to get to a different bus station to catch an express to Leon. By the time we arrived in Leon about 4:00 p.m. or so, we were ready to relax.
The connections from one place to another keep a traveler on the move and the time passes quickly.
