Lily took me to the Forbidden City on a cold weekday in January, 2006.
It waa actually a good day for me to see it because the cold kept the number of vistors low.
I was able to see it much better because so few were there. Occasionally we came upon groups of tourists receiving a tour from a professional guide,
but I felt very lucky to have my own personal guide and interpreter.
Lily was able to read everything and answered all my questions.

Near the end of our tour, we came to a hot food stand out in an open square. Several ladies dished up hot food from a steam table.
We bought our food and carried it on a tray into a little hole in the wall dining room,
which may have served at one time as a staff dining hall for eunuchs.
The room was rustic, primitive, heated only to the extent that we could take off our gloves, hats and scarves before eating our meal.
The meal was traditional foods of China, the same as we would have eaten at a common lunch restaurant outside the Forbidden City,
but more expensive because it was served at a historical site.
Lily and I ate heartily because a few hours of being out in the cold had given us a big appetite.
