Ruiping carried the 35MM camera and Lily carried the video recorder. Just outside the gate, we saw these 3 girls and a young man
with a huge bouquet of flowers. We wondered if he was meeting 1 of these girls, or was he just hoping to. The girls were very well dressed and quite happy and not at all interested in the
man. Ruiping and I could not resist. He stood behind me and aimed the camera at the girls and shot several photos of them just hanging out. Young people in China are quite interested in being fashionable.

We have to be willing to get rid of the life we have planned for us to have the life that is waiting for us (Joseph Campbell).
Letting go of my career as a Programmer Analyst in Investments was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I felt as if the best parts of me, the parts I loved the most, had died and all my greatest achievements were behind me. But if I continued working, I would not have taken up my Masters Degree program at NC State, and then I would not have met my friend, Lily, and she would not have invited me to visit her family in Beijing. I would not have met Kejian, Xiulan or Ruiping. I would not have toured the Summer Palace.
I would not have bought art in Luilichang or climbed 3 miles of the Great Wall at Badaling.
