This is a great lo and I love that you explained to us why you did the effect on the photos. I understand, but wonder if you just made the one in the left hand corner more clear if it would still have the same effect, but allow us to see a clear picture of your daughter also..just a thought. But otherwise, this is amazing and I just love your journaling. Would you come do the journaling in my albums since I have such a tough time with that **laughing**
Love the title and embellishments! I think this is really nice. The clean lines keep it from looking too crowded. Great work. (I like using filters, too. :) )
One response I have seen repeated is that critics are unsure how they feel about me using the colored pencil filter on all the photos in this layout. First let me say that, even in my family, there is controversy over that. I like it more than my daughter does. I thought I'd explain why I chose that filter for this application.
Sometimes I like it because it is not necessary to see the details or identity of the subject to appreciate the meaning of the photo. By stripping away the personal identity, it changes the subject into 'a young girl' so that more people can identify with her. It appears this happened with ChandraLa, making her think about what music meant to her family. Sometimes, I want the emotional value to come through the photo, more than the looks of the subject. Sometimes I think that a beautiful subject can actually interfere withe conveying the real meaning, and make it just a 'pretty picture'.
My gd feels like she is photographed too much, and sometimes I think she prefers for her photos to be obscured.
And the last reason I like to use the virtual painter filters is that I think it translates the photos into an art form. In effect, this elevates the subject matter, making it seem somehow a little more sacred. It also obscures the fact that I am only a mediocre photographer with a mediocre digital camera. I am a creative person, but I am not an artist except in my ability to see the art that is in life, and to convey that through scrapbooking or writing. It used to be that only the wealthy could afford to romanticize their lives into art, but now, through digital photography and writing, I am able to represent the art that I see in the lives of my family. For me, this is my art form, and virtual painter is one of my tools.
I love the journaling in your layout. My family was quite the opposite, everyone in my mother's family learned an instrument, and my mother even went to school and earned her BFA in Music, but there weren't many opportunities for female musicians in the 70's. I don't think she has played an instrument in almost 30 years. We never had the money for lessons when I was a child, even though I badly wanted to learn how to play the piano and the violin. Perhaps one day I'll take lessons for myself.
I like the layout of your layout. I like the effect on your photos, but I feel it's a little too strong. I know when I blur something in photoshop I can "turn it down". Maybe if you took it down a notch or two (I mean a number or two on the scale of the blur effect, I don't know the technical term) it would still have the beautiful effect that draws your eyes to the photos, but it wouldn't seem like I need to clean my glasses. I mostly squint at just one photo, and that is the one on the far left hand side. I think because Leah is facing the camera and you can't see the details of her face. I really like the look of effect on the middle photo. However, the more I think about it, the more I think the blur makes the left photo look like a watercolor painting. I think it depends on how crisp you want your photos to look. Your layout is for you, after all.
Well done, Ilene :)! Love how balanced this LO is and the colors you chose really enhance the photos -- the musical embellishments are well-chosen and stratgically placed too -- adds to the overall theme and balance of the LO, without being overpowering. Is the musician your daughter? If so, you must be very excited and proud that she has found her niche in music - by her expression in the first photo, she seems to have great joy in this artform :)! This is a beautiful LO! I can see why it's your favorite! The whole thing is so well balanced and the colors and papers you chose really make the photos stand out. I love the musical embellishments you used. Amazing LO!!
Supplies and embellishments used: Black cardstock, brown cardstock, and patterned papers from a big inexpensive variety pack of papers. 3-dimensional die-cut violin, bow and music book from Jolee's Boutique; Opera glasses, french horn, grand piano, violin and bow, music stand, kettle drum, and treble clef stickers are from Creative Memories and the piano keys border came from the dollar tree.
The Welcome Magic tag came from Hot Off the Press HOTP4501 Creativity Words Quotes. I had to hunt it down and it was hiding in a bookcase.
Great layout. You really have an exceptional eye for balance. I like the filter, but I wonder if its a little much on all 3 photos. I find myself wishing to get one clear vision of your daughter's face. Where did you find these great music embellies? I'm having Makin' Music for Meg's birthday party and have been looking all over for some good stuff -- either digital or non, and haven't come up with much yet.
You must be very proud!! I love the balance of the page and the filter you applied! Other than angie's suggestion, I really don't think you need any changes here! This is absolutely beautiful!! and btw, since you're a writer, I'm absolutely curious if you'd send us a copy of your journaling (but of course, if it's private, I'd understand). TFS!
I really love the design of this lo! Great balance on the 2 page spread. The papers you chose go great with the pics, and what fun stickers for this lo! I've looked and looked and looked to see if there was anything in this great lo that I could make a suggestion on, and the only thing I could come up with is this (which is extremely minor): on the title, "The first" and the M on "Musician" run into eachother, and it might look a little better if there was just a little more space between the two so they didn't overlap. Very beautiful, balanced, cohesive lo!
These photos were taken with a sony dsc10 digital camera. I edited them with PSP9, and subjected them to the Virtual Painter 4 colored pencil filter (my favorite filter). A copy of the center photo is posterized and framed, and hanging on my craft room wall. This is my favorite layout.
*** Welcome Magic *** The first Musician in the family *** Wake County Wide Elementary Spring Concert 2004 200 performers * At five years old my grandaughter started begging for a violin. She was so certain that this was the perfect instrument for her. We took her to Mars music to try out holding a violin in the practice room. Every time she had an opportunity, she asked to go to Mars. She even dressed up to show us how beautiful she looked with the violin! No one in our family had ever been trained to play a musical instrument, but my husband and I have taken her to North Carolina Symphony concerts since she was four. *** She started Kindermusik when she was six years old, and has been there ever since. The director of Kindermusik learned music as a child, when her grandmother funded her piano lessons, so she really appreciates that we fund lessons for our granddaughter. *** I was in the gift shop at Longwood Gardens in Philadelphia, on August 1, 2002, with my granddaughter when she was just 7 years old. We heard “Ode to Joy”. I was surprised that my granddaughter hummed along, perfectly, as if it was very familiar to her. She didn’t often get the chance to listen to classical music at home. Though she heard some classical music at our house, it was not likely that she learned it there. Suddenly, I realized that she must have learned it at Kindermusik! Kindermusik is worth the investment. *** Our granddaughter wants to be a professional musician when she grows up. *** Supplies and embellishments used: Black cardstock, brown cardstock, and patterned papers from a big inexpensive variety pack of papers. 3-dimensional die-cut violin, bow and music book from Jolee's Boutique; Opera glasses, french horn, grand piano, violin and bow, music stand, kettle drum, and treble clef stickers are from Creative Memories and the piano keys border came from the dollar tree.
