Williamsburg, Virginia, A Perfect Place to Celebrate Our 21st Anniversary
***
Larry and I have made a habit of taking our vacations during the week of the fourth of July, when we can also celebrate our anniversary. Vacations in Williamsburg are always great, but we especially enjoyed being there during the Independence Day celebrations. We had a fun packed week with trips to Busch Gardens, King’s Dominion, Yorktown and Jamestown Settlement.
We spent most of the day on July 2, our anniversary, at Jamestown Settlement with Jacqui and Leah. I liked exploring the Powhatan Village and was impressed with how well the Indians lived. Leah enjoyed the fort and even put on some armor and played some games that English settler children would have played. We got lots of pictures. Larry loved being on the ships tied to the dock, the Susan Constant, the Discovery and the Godspeed. We look forward to going back in 2007, to participate in the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in America.

Except For A Landlubber Like Ilene

Williamsburg is surrounded by water. On the North Side, Cheatham Annex is situated on the York River, at a point where it appears to be at least a mile wide. Jamestown Settlement is on the James River, just south of Williamsburg, and the Atlantic Ocean is not far to the East. This is probably why the area is so rich in military bases and historical sites. Larry loves being around water. It reminds him of his kayaking days in Maine. But I am very reluctant to be on ships and have refused numerous attempts to get me on one. I would not have gotten onto the ships at Jamestown Settlement except that they were tied to the docks with big ropes.
I remember going on a short cruise with Larry and his father Fred, in Boothbay Harbor, on the Maine Coast. “Do you know what that is?” Fred asked, pointing to a gauge that said ‘158’. “No,” I said. “That is the depth meter!” If I could walk on water, I would have.

There will be no more cruises for me.
