The page design is great for helping the reader focus on the journaling and then refering to the pics. The journiling is very informative and tells a great story of the process of his education. The one thing I felt it lacked was the emotional side of his experience here. Again, I think this is a side that only Larry could convey - he was the one feeling and experiencing. I would love to hear that side of the story too. Why did he decide to become a pastor? Did he ever have trials that made him wonder if it was the right thing to do? Did he recieve the personal confirmations from the spirit at various times in his studies there that let him know this was God's will for him? Maybe this is one of those times when he would be willing to record. They are definitely things you would want your posterity to know. On first looking at the lo I saw lots of light on the left side and lots of dark on the right. I know that that is because the shots on the left were taken outside and the ones on the right were taken inside, but I think it would be good to lighten the shots on the right. Because of the spiritual content of this layout I think you should keep everything light. Christ is the light of the world. The shady dark pics on one side made me think more of penance and self deprivation than rejoicing in the light of Christ. That may seem silly, but my mind tends to see things very symbolically. I hope these thoughts help.
I love the symmetrical design! I too am confused about the Duke University? The colors of the papers you used for journaling for each page seem different to me, maybe it's just the scan, but if not, I think it will look better if the left and right papers were the same so we can read the title (LTSS) more cohesively. I love all the details you included in the journaling!
Nice work conveying this time in his life. My only area of slight confusion is did he get his degree from Duke University in 1998 at the same time he completed LTSS? Or was that later? I read the journaling before looking at the pictures and the cross on the wall in one of the pics jumped out to me as the one in your story. I really liked the way your pictures linked the visual to the verbal. I felt that not only had I heard the story, but I'd "been there" as well. The pictures on the right seem a little dark, but that could be the scan. If they are dark enough in real life for it to be difficult to see them you could lighten them with a photo program. If you don't have a photo program you could email them to me and I will lighten them for you. :) Let me know if that would be helpful and I will send you my email address. You did very well with this 2 page layout. I enjoyed reading it. :)
*** Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary August 1997 - May 1988 *** From August 1997 until May 1998, Larry completed his last year studying at LTSS so he could become a Lutheran pastor. It was by the grace of God that he had funding for that school year. Ilene had become disabled early in 1997. Pastor Dave Keck at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where Larry served as Vicar, heard about the loss of income and that it might interrupt Larry’s seminary education. The church council set up a scholarship fund and the members of Good Shepherd were generous in giving to it. The scholarship paid all of his expenses for that year. It was the member’s way of showing they wanted Larry to become a pastor. *** Larry had a private room in Beam Residence Hall, which he needed because of his asthma. He likes to keep his space clean and organized and to have a quiet place to study and sleep. Ilene bought nice things to make his room feel like home. Other students, upon entering his room for the first time, would comment that he had the best decorated and neatest dorm room they had ever seen. Larry always thought of his room and his year at LTSS as blessings and he worked hard to show how much he appreciated the love that had made them possible. *** Larry adjusted well to seminary life, which is no surprise because he spent all 4 of his high school years at St. John’s Atonement Seminary . The cross on the wall over his bed at LTSS is the same one he laid on his pillow in St John’s. He also hung pictures of Duke Chapel on the wall over his desk, next to his favorite motivational scriptures. *** Larry’s classes were scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday, which allowed him to go home for 2-3 days a week. This was another blessing. During the Christmas semester break, he gutted and remodeled the kitchen of the house on Greywood, which was in itself a great leap of faith because nobody could predict where he would be called when he graduated. One Sunday, when he returned to the seminary, the tall gingko tree outside his window had turned yellow, bathing his room in a beautiful golden glow. *** He had to really organize his time at the seminary well. Because of his maturity, he did a better job than most students of keeping up with his assignments, and even managed to get some assignments in early. He socialized with other seniors but did not graduate with them. He got his degree from Duke University. ***
