5,000 POUND CHILI PEPPER

This 47-foot long behemoth concrete Chili Pepper was built in 2010-2011 by the owners of a motel who thought it would attract tourists to their neighborhood and give Las Cruces an identity. (The chili pepper is New Mexico's favorite crop.)

On the outside wall facing the street is a large banner which says "World's Largest Chile".

What amused us is that this was obviously the site of the original swimming pool which was near the highway. (A new larger-sized pool is in the back of the hotel - we know because we swam in it.) The walls enclosing the giant fire-engine red chili are the original pool walls and it even has an iron gate leading into the chili pepper structure - the type of gate that hotels use for entrance to the pool area. If you look closely at the area of the photo around Bill's feet you can see the tile pool surround and the gravel around his feet which was the actual pool which was filled in.
