Rivington Castle was built by the Late Lord Leverhulme who wanted it to replicate the origional Liverpool Castle which was destroyed after the Civil War (1642-50).
Work was started on the Castle in 1912 but after Leverhulmes death in 1925 all work ceased. It was however as he wanted. He wanted it to be a ruin not a castle. As children we would play for many hours in the grounds, its locally known as The Black Princes Castle. As a child my husband fell from the top ( the second picture on the right )breaking his pelvis, both ankles his wrist and a leg. Needless to say his Mother wasn't very pleased as he had three months in hospital.
