For anyone following my Canadian Cruise layouts - We got on the ship in Quebec City and found out that night that a hurricane was headed towards the east coast. We were supposed to see Bar Harbor, Maine, Newport Rhode Island, New York and Boston. All of those ports were cancelled because we were scheduled to be in New York that Hurricane Sandy made her appearance so they kept us in Canadian ports where the hurricane was not felt at all. They skipped all the east coast ports and from Canada our first stop from the ship was Charleston. We were on Princess and they fortunately made the call to wait in Canada until the storm passed. Passengers on one of the Norwegian ships weren't so lucky. They had a similar itinerary and they were taken to New York anyway on the day of the storm. They had to go out to sea and sit off the coast during the hurricane. I heard it was very rough and rocky and not fun at all. So glad they didn't make that bad call for us on the Princess ship.

Here's the journaling:

Saturday, November 3, 2012 – Some of the passengers on the ship were scheduled to end their cruise in New York but because of Hurricane Sandy the ship was not allowed to stop at the port in New York. This morning we docked in Boston so those who were supposed to get off in New York could get on a chartered bus to take them from Boston to the airport in New York. No one else was allowed to get off the ship. After stopping for about 2 hours we were out in the ocean again on our way to Charleston, South Carolina.

Sunday – November 4, 2012 – Uneventful day at sea. However, lobster for dinner made it a good day! Excellent lobster with drawn butter! We always love lobster on the Princess ships – they always prepare it perfectly! Actually it is a shrimp and lobster plate. Bill had 3 lobster tails and I had 2 – I asked them to hold the shrimp and bring me an extra lobster tail instead.

Monday – November 5, 2012 – We had a full day to explore Charleston, South Carolina. We started the day with breakfast in the ship's and then we boarded the hop-on hop-off trolley. We got off on King Street and walked along looking at the cute shops but we didn't buy anything. We only went in 2 or 3 antique shops and they were REAL furniture antiques, not the American Fostoria Depression glass we collect or license plates like Bill collects.

We walked along a beautiful old cobblestone street with charming homes and businesses and then went into the Old Slave Market which is now a museum. The museum looked interesting but we didn't have much time in Charleston and didn't want to spend all of it in the museum. The building was interesting though – it was the last place in Charleston where slaves were auctioned. We've come so far since those days that I can't even comprehend anything so horrible.

Next we walked through the Charleston City Market and bought 6 plaster-like tiles to hang on the walls in the guest house. The artist explained how he made the molds and then casted the tile using a concrete-like material. After it was set he filed and sanded it and finished it with a thin coat of pastel paint. One is a seahorse, one is a starfish and the other 4 are all things from the beach or ocean – all in pastel colors. Bill bought me an inexpensive eel wallet too – it is larger than I usually carry but designed and made really well so I know I am going to enjoy it.
