Photos I took on August 30, 2008 on Dorothy Dunn Lake in Vilas County, Wisconsin.

This is my example for my September Four Categories Challenge - Category Three ~ Technique: Handmade Embellies. I made the lily pads. The twist is to use at least one of our past techniques on the LO. I used 3: punching, misting, and doodling.

This is also for the VLB challenge to do a labor intensive LO.

I have been wanting to try making lily pads for ages since I saw them on a LO by Heidi Kelley. I couldn't find any info on how she made hers, so I came up with my own, and I LOVE how they came out. For each lily pad, I cut two cardstock circles of the same size and cut out the wedges. The bottom layer is a darker cs than the top. I scored a line coming from the tip of the wedge for the center vein. I wet each circle and began curling and distressing the edges. I sprayed all the bottom layers with Tattered Leather GM, letting the mist pool more along the edges. I did the same for the top layers with Sweet Clover GM, then restacked each pair and continued with the curling and shaping, as well as pinching up the center vein. I sprayed each lily pad with varying amounts and placements of Tattered Leather, Olive Vine, and Patina GMs, letting them pool together in places or stand alone in places while drying a bit with the heat gun between applications to set the mists. When I was satisfied with the color of each pad, I dried them to the point that there was no liquid mist left but the cs was still damp and splattered them with Suede GM from the straw (instead of spraying). I let them dry completely overnight.

To make the bg's, I used a mask with sprayed and splattered Tattered Leather and Patina GM's as well as some distress inks applied with a blending tool. I punched the edges of my pp with the Threading Water punch and applied the narrow borders with molding paste so that the paste oozed up through the holes and over some of the edges. I cut the title using Lyrical Letters on my Cricut and quilled a few tendrils. I doodled the dragonfly trail.
