To put it simply a railfan is a person who enjoys taking pictures of trains. We are labeled, as rail-fans, train-buffs, rail enthusiasts (UK), train nuts, and a not so nice one, foamer, indicating that we foam at the mouth every time we see something cool. This term describes my youngest son, Daniel, who's been an avid train enthusiast since he was a toddler!

The picture of Dan in front of the locomotive was one of his senior pictures that I took. There is a funny story behind that. We had gotten permission from a guy in the BNSF office a few weeks prior to the picture taking session. The day we did it, we parked in the parking lot, got out and went over to the locomotive, took pictures from the side and then headed to the front, all the while the locomotive engine is running. So I start taking these pictures of him in front of it and I see a guy walking toward us and he asks, what are you two doing here? You are trespassing! I will call the cops if you don't leave. I told him we got permission from a guy in the office and he says, who? I gave him the guy's name and then he proceeds to tell me the guy didn't have the authority to let us do that! We would need to ask the yardmaster! So, we left after getting our pictures. We later learned that the yardmaster is the dad to one of Dan's classmates! We could've asked him after all! Thankfully, this one came out good! I did a little photo-shopping to it showing the headlights to be on instead of off, as well as changing the color to a more washed out look and making his jeans look black.

For the layout, since I couldn't find anything train-related at our local craft stores for paper or embellies I decided to use a picture that he took of a tunnel up Tumwater Canyon. I fussy-cut around the locomotive picture (boy, was that a chore!) and also the tunnel and attached his picture making it appear to be coming out of the tunnel. The railroad crossing and signs are pictures he's taken at different “railfanning” times! Also fussy-cut around them. He gave me some of his railroad track from a train set to use on it and also gave me the suggestion for the title (both of which I really appreciated). I decided using the gears and swivel clasps on this would be a good match. The black and gold circular object in the lower left is actually a shank button I had in my stash. I cut off the shank to add to this. The copper colored ribbon is actually metal and can be formed any which way. So cool!

The stuff under the track is actually kitchen drawer liner! At the bottom of the page I used Stampendous Frantage Mica flakes and Shabby White embossing powder to make it look like the ballast under and along the tracks. In the title I applied Mod Podge Dimensional Magic to make it stand out a little better. My husband brought the key on the right side home from work the day before I made this and said he'd found it by the railroad tracks where they load and unload at the plant. Dan said they probably use those somewhere in the locomotive so that was an extra special touch! I colored it a little with Tim Holtz alcohol ink in caramel.
