The colors in this layout didn't scan very well. The background cardstock is actually tan (I don't know why it looks purple in this scan). The 3 circles on each side of the left-hand page are large copper brads (they look black with silver rims on the scan!).

Even though these pictures are old and faded (they were taken 24 years ago with a little instamatic camera), I wanted to capture the memories of this first camping experience.

Journaling:
We went camping as a family for the first time in June 1982, along with 3 other church families. One family loaned us a tent, we gathered a hodge-podge of supplies and utensils from around the house, and off we went to a campground in Lancaster County. We enjoyed it so much that during the next 2 months we bought our own camping gear – tent, cots, sleeping bags, folding table, propane stove and lantern, pots & pans, and anything else we hoped would make our camping experience more pleasant.

Finally we were ready to go it alone. We headed to Hickory Run State Park in the Poconos for a long Labor Day Weekend.

Jennifer, who had just turned 5, loved exploring our campsite and the trail that led down to a small stream. Kay and her family were spending that weekend at the Tysons’ cottage on Penn Lake, and they visited us at our campsite. One hot and sunny afternoon I took Jennifer and Crissy to Hickory Run Lake for a swim.

That was just the first of many enjoyable camping trips during the next 10+ years.
