Sarah led us up the magnificent three story spiral staircase to the second floor. At the landing was a gilded mirror showing the continuation of the staircase to the third story. Tom and I lost count on the number of bedrooms on this floor. The master bedroom (green walls) had what they called a rolling pin bed. They would stuff the mattress with Spanish moss. The housekeeper would remove the rolling pin from the head of the bed and roll the mattress removing any lump occurring during the night. I love the canopy beds in the ladies and children’s room. The toys were interesting. The iron carriage and cart where popular with children in the early and mid 1800’s. I have to admit the monkey dolls kind of freak me out. The owners of the Houmas House were very smart in making dual purposes for things. The table was also a writing table. It was split down the middle. When pushes apart, there was a seat and a desk with a drawer. The child’s high chair could be converted to a stroller. A walking stick was also a rifle. The odd shaped chair was for a soldier. When he had a saber on, it was impossible to sit. Problem solved! I tried to get Tom is wear the horse hair wig but no dice.

Another for the scraps challenge by using up aqua, white and twig scraps.
