My friends, I have to say I really struggled with this layout for a good two weeks! It is totally different than my original thought of making a quilt square with paper products. I just couldn't find papers in my stash I wanted to use, then I remembered this hankie 8x8 paper that I wanted for sure to use because my Poppy carried them around with him. The photo is from 1959 when I was just a baby. It is of Poppy, Grandma and all of their grandkids (before Oliver Don was born). My oldest brother Travis and sister Bunny are standing and seated from L to R are my brother Marshall, cousins Pat, Dale, my brother Robert, my cousins Skip (Roy) holding Cis (Cleda), me and my cousin Darlene holding me. Both my grandparents are gone now and my sweet cousin Darlene passed away this past July after battling cancer for about 12 years.
My Poppy died just a couple weeks shy of my 4th birthday but there are still so many things I remember and loved about him. It is funny sometimes how much you can remember when you get older if you think about it!

Almost all of my embellishments I used are things that I remember about Poppy and Grandma. They were strong in their Primitive Baptist beliefs and faith in God so I added the bible and a song from our old Good Old Songs book, Angel Band, which was one of Poppy's favorites. Poppy raised a few milk cows, pigs, chickens and peacocks. A garden was pretty much a necessity and they grew a big one. Poppy grew some of the biggest watermelon I'd ever seen and I still remember him slicing into those and passing them out to us kids. They were so good and sweet. Grandma did a lot of canning over the years and when they moved from Oklahoma to Porterville, California during the Dust Bowl they ran out of money somewhere in Arizona and she sold her canned goods to get them the rest of the way. They settled finally in Fresno, where I was raised. Grandma sewed, crocheted, knitted and made quilts. She also loved her flowers. Not long after they'd settled in California they found out that the people who moved onto their property in Oklahoma struck oil! I can't imagine what they must have felt when they heard that news.

When I misted the hankie it seemed to dry lighter so I inked it all over with TH Fired Brick after scrunching it all up and letting it dry. I did a lot of fussy cutting as you can see. I got a lot of the photos off the internet, printed them out and then cut them out. I cut green twine into tiny pieces and glued it on to look like grass under the cow and chickens. I kinda like how that turned out! :-)

Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you're having an awesome week!
