Journaling: Dora Fortune Revello. My husband’s mom. My “other” mother. I first met her 7 years ago when she was 86 years old. I’ll never forget that day. Here was this woman from a VERY different generation than mine meeting her son’s girlfriend for the first time. Ken’s divorce wasn’t final yet and I was pregnant. I was 30 years old but felt like an unwed pregnant teenager, nervous of what she’d think of me. But when I met her she gave me a big hug and said, “Hi honey. I’m so glad to be getting another daughter.” She welcomed me with open arms, and I loved her for that. She has been a good mother-in-law. Dora is 93 years old now and she has Alzheimer’s. This disease takes away a person’s memories bit by bit until there is nothing left. It’s a hard thing for her family to watch. I think the hardest thing is when you see her & she looks like the same old Dora, but you have to realize that she is no longer the woman you always knew. It’s hard to accept. Most of the time she still knows who we are now. Sometimes when I see her she doesn’t remember my name. I think that’s probably because she hasn’t known me for as long a time as she has the rest of her family. And that’s okay. But I will always remember her. 5/26/06
