The journey to this year's solo was kind of strange. I'm the studio's only pointe soloist (because I'm the only person nuts enough to do it) and I'd gotten away with not doing a classical ballet solo for years. This year, the studio owner wanted me in full tutu dancing to classical music. Thankfully, my solo instructor doesn't like classical music and he was trying to find something instrumental for me to do...but he couldn't find anything...so he tried to sell the studio owner on my doing a rock solo which didn't fly. Then it was a solo to country music but that annoyed him so that didn't go. We were on our fifth or sixth attempt at trying to find a song when we started using the song "Magic to Do" from the play "Pippin" for jazz BUT no one in the jazz class, except me, liked the song so the instructor cut it. He, however, didn't want to drop the song so he gave it to me for my solo (an idea that was gleefully accepted by both my mom and I...my mom because she loves the play "Pippin" and myself because I got to get away from classical music another year). This dance is completely unlike any other solo I've ever done. It's Broadway jazz meets ballet on pointe shoes meets a little bit of acro thrown in there. The costume was just a happy accident. My instructor happened to find this ringmaster's costume in one of the costume books and that kind of sealed the deal. The hat, however, is not attached to my head. It's become a prop that on my head, off my head, in my hands, and on the ground. (I'm not ACTUALLY supposed to be Pippin. I'm supposed to be a character called "the Leading Player" who is ringmaster, narrator, and Pippin's conscience in the play.)
