JOURNALING:

May 2003. Picture this. I spent weeks planning
a vacation to Disney for Summer’s 3rd birthday.
I made calls at 6 a.m. when the reservation lines open to get seats for dinner with Cinderella at the Grand Floridian (fanciest hotel there). On May 28 we got up & took the birthday girl to breakfast with Mickey. She frowned in every single photo. What is with this kid? Well she’s very shy & Mickey & the gang are very big to a kid, but we had fun. They brought her a birthday cupcake. We got autographs. Good food. Nice. We went back to our hotel & Ken took her for a swim & I went to find an outlet, which is a whole ‘nother story. Got back later than planned, walked in to find Summer asleep. Now, it was 4 p.m. & our reservation was for 5:00, so I had 30 minutes to
get us ready. Yeah, right. I woke her up & tried to get her dressed. She was not cooperative. She is grouchy when she wakes up & today was no exception. Ken & I pleaded & begged & reminded
her that it was her BIRTHDAY & we drove a long
way & we were going to see CINDERELLA & have
DINNER with her! YEA! Yeah, right. She did not
want to go. Ok, here’s the thing. Dinner with Cindy is a VERY HARD reservation to get. We decided to go only a few weeks before & reservations had opened up 90 days prior, so the ONLY one I could get was THIS day at THIS time. That’s it. And I was LUCKY I got that one. So I planned the other days at Disney around this event. I bought her a lovely blue Cinderella-ish dress on ebay. Then we drove 1,200 miles to Florida to give this kid a cool birthday. Now
it was time to go & she DIDN’T WANT TO GO! So
I was dressed & Ken was dressed & she was crying
because she just woke up & we were trying to hurry & she didn’t want to go. Then I was crying. I couldn’t believe I did all that planning to give my kid something & she was being stubborn as a mule. So Ken said, “You
gotta be kidding me.” He grabbed Summer under the armpits, held her up in the air and said, “Put that damn dress on her. We’re GOING!!” I got her dress on as she screamed & kicked her feet & off we went. She pouted the whole drive there. The Grand Floridian is stunning. We met Prince Charming & Cinderella & Suzy & Perla, got their photos & autographs. She frowned in all the photos AGAIN. Are you KIDDING me? They gave her a lovely birthday cake & we had a good meal. We took her photo in front of the resort in a white carriage & next to a cool old car. More frowning. It wasn’t exactly the
birthday vacation I had planned for her, but it was one that we’ll be telling the story of for the rest of her life because we’re never gonna let her forget it!
