This was a LO I felt compelled to do because this is the only surviving photo of DH's mother as a child. The original photo was of such poor quality that I had it professionally scanned - a bit better here. Journaling reads: “To My Grandchildren. This is the only known picture of your Great Grandmother as a child. Hester Herrin was ten years old and the year was 1914. Dressed in her Sunday best, I can only imagine that it was taken after Church and most likely by a visitor as no one in her family owned a camera. She was standing by her home, an unpainted board and batten structure, in a sandy Georgia yard that was swept clean of every leaf and twig. As the oldest child, Hester was frequently responsible for minding her younger brother and sister while her parents worked in the fields of the family farm. One of the stories she told your Grandfather was about her difficulties with her brother Monsie who was stronger than she and at times hard to manage. Hester discovered that when he became too difficult, she could tie a rope around his neck and he would become calm and obedient.
