Photos of some of mom's Allium. Journaling says:Mom was a great gardener. She grew the most beautiful roses, peonies, bleeding hearts and daisies. One of her favorite flowers was Allium. It sends up this very tall stem with a perfect ball of purple flowers. She put the bulbs against the fence and the flowers always looked beautiful against the weathered wood. Eventually the tiny flowers die and the ball continues to stand, but loses its vibrance. It becomes a light brownish color. Mom had the idea to buy a bright red floral paint and spray each of the flower heads. They were so beautiful and could be seen from the road. She began to notice a woman slowly driving back and forth, day after day, looking at the flowers. This was a snobby woman who often looked “down her nose” at Mom. The woman continued her observations each Fall for several years. Finally one day the she stopped at the house to ask Mom where she found bulbs for her red Allium. She said she had been to every nursery in town and was told they’d never heard of red Allium. I know Mom was delighted to know that she had fooled this woman for years, but being Mom, she couldn’t lie and finally told the woman the truth. The woman left in a bit of a huff, but Mom had a good laugh after she was gone.
