This was a fun layout to do. It is a scraplift of addler's: The Little Stuff. I'm slowly making an album of my hometown. For the DW challenge I used ribbon and memorabilia from Feb.calendar.Journaling says: This was the Burley Armory. It has since been converted to the Fire Department. We spent a lot of time at this building beginning in 1968. The Vietnam War was raging and Steve had received a student deferment while he was in school. Troops were needed so badly that Students, married men, and even fathers were no longer granted deferments. In 1968 the lottery system was initiated and Steve’s lottery number was very low. We knew he would be drafted and we had just learned that we were expecting our first child. We were living and going to school in Utah at the time when we received a call that the Burley National Guard had two openings for enlistment. Steve is totally devoted to his country and would have served honorably if he’d been drafted, but this seemed the answer to our prayers. Steve and his friend, Ralph, drove to Idaho to enlist. They were able to fill those spots. He spent 6 years in the 116th Armored Cavalry in Burley and then transferred to a unit closer to our home. He served in the 116th Corps of Engineers for many years and then was asked to transfer to the 141st Military Intelligence Unit in Provo. The National Guard was certainly not a “draft dodge for Steve, as he stayed in the National Guard and retired after 24+ years. He flies a huge American Flag every day in our front yard, and tears always come when he hears the National Anthem. We are so proud of his service to his country.
