For some reason, memories about my first car popped into my head. I don’t have any photographs of that car, so I found these on the Internet. I wish I knew how to paste the two pages together for posting since I cut the middle photo between the two pages.

Journaling reads: This little blue bug crawled into my life sometime around 1980, shortly after yet another break-up of my parents. Dawn and I had just started at our new school when Mom got back together with my stepfather. So they bought an old powder blue VW beetle, and I set out to get my driver's license. I had to learn on a stick-shift because that's what the bug came with. I can remember the instructor making me take off on hills to learn how to maneuver the clutch. That would totally freak me out. And once, the instructor came to pick me up, and the gear shift came out of the car! Luckily, I survived all that drama and got my license. I drove 20 miles each way to get us to school. It was an old car with faded paint and one of those engines that sounded kind of like a tin can rattling around. The worst thing about this old beetle was that it had no heat, so in the winter, I had to drive with a wool blanket on my lap. I got my first ticket in that blue bug. I remember one time I was driving on 270 in my Roy Rogers outfit. These four truckers decided they were going to have a little fun with me. They boxed me in and followed me that way up the highway. I could feel my little bug shimmying as I tried to keep up speed with those giant 18-wheelers. I don't think I've ever gripped a steering wheel that tightly. It could be scary driving that little old bug. But I have to admit, it was pretty cool having my own car. Well, it was mine sometimes anyway. Mom wound up driving it a lot when she didn't have a car. One time she was driving it, and Gram was following behind her–way too closely as only Gram knows how to do. When Mom stopped at a traffic light, Gram plowed right into that little bug with her big-ole Cadillac–smashed right into the back so that the door to the engine couldn't open. I can't recall anymore whatever happened to that powder blue bug.

Materials: Scenic Route, Jenni Bowlin, and AL Rhonna Farrer patterned papers. Martha Stewart tag.
