Only that year Grampa had planted a dwarf cherry tree. Well, it wasn't so dwarf after all. Those weeks we were up there we all picked and pitted over fifty quarts of cherries. Despite cherry juice stains and never wanting to see another pit again, it was worth it. My Granny's pies are practically a legend in their town and we got dibs on plenty of fresh cherry pie. Oh, yeah, it was worth the work! It's bittersweet, but a bit more sweet than bitter that the tree hasn't produced nearly as many cherries since that summer.
