We woke in Nikko. {Tochigi prefecture .... mountain fog .... curious ..... elated}
After an entire month in Japan, this was the first day I found myself utterly entranced by my surroundings. Nikko is *gorgeous*. Actually reminds me of Oregon. [which makes sense since we’re on the same longitude ... but anyway ...]
Nestled amongst ancient evergreens and crystal clear streams, stand these IMMENSE, elaborate structures, walkways, and staircases that scale mountains, and echo the lives of centuries passed. This place is the Toshogu Shrine. Pictured here is the Rinnoji Temple.
We visited at a very special time; the day of the Shunki Reitaisai - or “Grand Spring Festival”. The grounds teemed with visitors, both native and foreign. The Hyakumono-Zoroe Sennin Gyoretsu (procession) was amazing, the atmosphere - breathtaking. I feel truly blessed to have been present for such a celebration!
It broke my heart to think that this exotic treasure had been sitting here the whole time we were in Americanized Tokyo. We’ve vowed to spend as much time away from the city as possible, next time ‘round.
