Photos are from a group of photos taken of the house my family lived in most of the time I was in high school, but several years later, the day before ownership transferred to the new owners. Going through the emotions of seeing the house for the last time, empty and no longer ours, makes me want to take pictures of where I live now, while we are still here, and as we really are.
I also live in a very different climate now. My husband has lived in Iowa his whole life except for a few brief trips and HATED Arizona. It's so different, like landing on another planet, so I like the photos of what makes Arizona what it is, so I can explain it to my son.
"This fascinating desert plant was in the yard of our next door neighbors, the Clarks. Most of the time, it looks like a bunch of bare, thorny sticks, but after a rain it sprouts small oval leaves and the tips of the branches grow scarlet flames. A few days or a week later, when the water is gone, it returns to its dormant state. It is not unusual in Tucson to see ocotillo branches attached to a fence and pieces will root. When it rains, the fence becomes alive with color!"
