This is for Flashback Friday Challenge on the pub.We had a boat. Almost everybody in Michigan had a boat of some kind We didn't mean to have one though! When my father had his first heart attack, we had to sell the big cabin cruiser, so we thought our boating days were over. But, my father was owed some money, and the man didn't have any, so instead of money, he gave my father his 18 foot boat! Having a boat was better than not getting paid anything-or so the story went! Having a boat didn't pay the bills though. As it turned out, however, having a boat was just what the doctor ordered for our ailing family. My father was recovering from a devastating heart attack, financial setbacks, and huge family problems (mostly caused by the financial problems!!) The time we spent on the boat was not only healing to his body and his soul, but to our fractured family. There were no phone calls (Yes, there WAS a time before cell phones!) There were no interruptions. There was just us, together as family, on the small boat. I treasure those weekend and frequent evenings we spent together on the boat. On the week day evenings, we'd leave as soon as Daddy drove his truck on the property. My mom had the picnic basket all ready to go, and the boat packed with her special fixings. We also had to have the fishing gear packed because the lake we'd go to wasn't really a pleasure lake, but a fishing lake! Only fishermen were supposed to launch their boats there. We had to look official! We'd put the boat in the water, then we'd cruise around –sometimes dodging the patrol boats who would check to see if everybody was fishing! We'd ride until about an hour before sunset, then look for a deserted spot on the shore of the tiny island in the middle of the lake. We'd beach the boat, drag our picnic stuff out, and enjoy the dinner on the shore. Then we'd put everything back in the boat and head on off to the boat launch area. Daddy loved to drive the boat fast and get us all wet. I can almost feel the fresh water spray in my face as I write this. We'd squeal and pretend we didn't like it, but I know he knew we really did. Fun times.I used a manipulated template from Pencil lines, and a kit from Simply Susan called Catch a Wave.
