I'm posting this as an example of how using water color paper you can get some very cool surreal backgrounds. This is made with three colors of distress inks and a Penny Black stamp. the second picture is what happens to the watercolor when coarse salt is added and allowed to sit on the paper for awhile. Ok, I started this by dampening a sheet of watercolor paper (wcp) and letting it sit for 8-10 min. The wetter the paper the ‘softer’ or blurrier the look. You'll want to test the paper you're using as the various papers absorb at varying rates. I used 3 colors of distress ink, broken glass, faded jeams and weathered wood and ‘swirled’ each one directly onto the craft sheet. I then laid the wcp into the colors gave the paper about a quarter turn. Once it dried I returned it to the craft sheet and just laid it into the remaining ink soaking it up, no turning this time. Repeat as needed to get the desire results. Then add coarse salt, just sprinkle it onto the paper. Allow to dry, remove the salt, BG done! While that's drying clean the craft sheet thoroughly. I chose a Penny Black stamp, the image is three ‘brush stroke trees’. I think a more detailed tree stamp here would create a better result but i have what i have. Cut the wcp to card size. Ink the tree image with Navy ink, stamp the trees 3 times w/o reinking. That gives the ‘forest’ look. Finally I added some acrylic glimmer paint to the bough tips again i'm using what I have. Glitter or puff paints or even a white gel pen would work. And lastly i added the matted sentiment circle. I know others have likely better described this process but I hope this helps.
