Scraplift of 2thfairy's LO “Joyful”, text reads:It was my first car, a 1974 Ford Pinto Hatchback. My parents bought it new for $3000.Dad drove so Mom got to pick the colors-RED with BLACK vinyl interior.A year later when I left for grad school, they sold it to me.I drove solo from Seattle, WA to Storrs, Ct.crisscrossing the country.During a record 1977 snowfall, it was completely buried.People skiied across the top of it.I traveled weekly from Storrs to Groton to teach without ever putting on snowtires,But an icicle punctured my gas tank unexpectantly leading to a rather comical encounter with the police.Returning to Seattle I drove through a tornado in Illinois. An errant driver knocked us in front of a trainstranding us on the rails. The train stopped.I moved to Oregon and commuted to Seattle weekly for medical treatment. At one point I was driving monthly round trips to California. The relationship didn't last but the car did. It would die on hills and only would start on flat ground. The windows made the interior so hot, it cooked vegetables on the way home from the store. It melted the seatbelts twice. Anything plastic was unsafe in warm weather.Yet I loved that car. For 13 years.
