Sometimes we went to my Aunt Barbara's or Grandma Peterson's, even Great-grandparents Johnson or Grandpa Elder's house for Christmas Eve dinner and festivities but every year since I was very little, Mom made Christmas day dinner. It's always the same…roast turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with toasted marshmallows, cranberry sauce (not whole berries), pickles, olives, green beans or asparagus, and of course the salads–orange jello with shredded carrots and pineapple and fruit salad with whipped cream, followed by pumpkin pie as well as a choice of blackberry or cherry pie. Plus Mom always makes other treats like divinity candy, fudge, chocolate candy rolls and zucchini bread. Mom insists on doing it all, no matter how many people can attend. Sometimes it's been just one of us kids and more often the house is full of friends and family. And now my kids get to enjoy this tradition…although they tell me they don't like jello salad. Say it isn't so. In 50 years, I've only missed Christmas dinner at home once. I hope we get to spend many more Christmas mornings opening presents at my mom’s hourse finishing the day off sitting around the table and sharing the traditional Christmas feast.
