The first of three pages devoted to my middle school years.

I'm proud of this page...I love the way the colors came out and it was my first attempt at using vellum.

The journaling reads:
"Eighth grade…so much happened this year. For one thing, I turned 13 and had my Bat Mitzvah. I wasn’t looking forward to it though. I didn’t like all the attention, and wasn’t friends with most of the kids in my Hebrew School and Sunday School classes.

I also had many, many different interests that year. They varied form Star Wars to The Simpsons and Elton John. In fact, this was the year I became a true Elton fan. It was also the year I started getting picked on for becoming interested in gay culture. It was not yet the case that being gay was (in some circles) considered cool. This was before Ellen or Rosie came out, and before Will and Grace, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy or Queer as Folk. What can I say? I was a head of my time.

That year, I also got really into writing. I’d always loved to write, but up until then it was art that got me first. I started writing a television show on a bet from my friend Laura that I could write a better show than Melrose Place, her favorite. One episode turned into about 20 in the course of a few years. From then on, writing would be my biggest passion.

By the end of the school year, I was looking forward to getting out of Westport and into Eastern High. I thought things would change for the better. And in some respects they did. Regardless of whether the changes were good or bad there were plenty of changes. I was starting to figure out who I was, and attempting to not be shy about it. It would take some time and I’m still hoping I’ll get all the way there one day, but back in eighth grade I took my first steps towards that goal."
