Here is one of my favorite pictures ever of Sterling. i took this at the Y during swim lessons and then doctored it up a bit. Thanks for looking!Journaling: Since we now have a pool of our own, I thought it was best to enroll the kids in swimming lessons. Preston was really excited, but Sterling was very apprehensive. You see, for his age group the kids are not allowed to use any flotation devices. With floaties on, Sterling swims like a little fish. He is amazingly fearless, self-assured and always ready to jump in the pool. The thought of swimming without floaties was terrifying to him and he was sure that he would drown. On the first day of lessons, Sterling refused to get in the water and I was baffled as what to say or do. This was definitely one of those times when I wish a parenting manual was issued when children are born. I decided to pull Sterling to the side and sit down next to him. We talked about fear – what it was and why he had it. I explained that fear often came from uncertainty and the only way to get over fear was to try to overcome it. He needed to literally take the plunge and trust his instructor. After a few minutes of talking, I convinced Sterling to slip into the water and go through with his first lesson. Each week he got better at swimming and his fear of the water started to lessen. Don’t get me wrong, he still loves his floaties, but I think after time he will have even more confidence in the water knowing that he can swim without any help at all. I’m proud of my little fish for not only learning how to swim but for overcoming a fear. My little guy is growing up right before my eyes.
