Among other things, it is called Black Dragon… or Stink Lily. Indeed, it is one of those plants that pollinates by attracting carrion insects with its (delightful-to-some) odor of rotting meat. Thank goodness it's pretty faint! But wow, a more striking flower is difficult to find. And this thing is BIG. The spathe (the purple petal-like part of the flower) is about 2 feet long, and the spadix is about half that… It's originally from Greece and Turkey, but apparently lives quite well in the Pacific Northwest. I think (with the post office's permission, in front of which this one has elected to proliferate) I'll snag a few seeds in the fall and plant them down at the bottom of the garden, to contrast with the calla lilies that are already down there…Credits: Background paper by Dana Zarling (Designer Digitals, Web Challenge Freebie 7/13/08).
