The journaling on this reads: My "Day of the Dead" Altar, that I made of palm fronds, marigolds, oranges, and strings of peanuts. On this there are a few pictures of deceased loved ones, and candles, as well as beer, hot chocolate, candies, nuts and Day of the Dead bread...for the spirits when they come to visit! These altars are built in just about every home in Mexico the last few days of October every year. There are huge fields of marigold flowers (along with velvety red Santa Teresa flowers) grown just for this reason, and for a few days the markets are a riot of orange, yellow and red flowers. Graveyards and cemetaries are also decorated...all in preparation for the return of the spirits of loved ones. A wonderful cultural tradition!
