With “Chanute,” this LO tells how time marched on in a military community where I lived with my parents from 1962-64 and revisited in 2003. This LO also was an opportunity to use up some old flower stickers.Journaling reads: When I was a baby, from August 1962 through January 1964, Mom, Dad and I lived in Champaign, Ill. while Dad was in the Army. My parents have quite a few photos of the old house, taken both inside and outside. And, when they had a chance to go back to Illinois in 1987, they discovered the old house was still there.Alas, when I had my chance to go back, in September 2003, things had changed. Don and I drove all the way to Chanute Air Force Base looking for a house that looked like the one in the photos. Thinking we had somehow missed it, I called my mother on my cell phone and asked her questions. But when we got to where we thought the house might have been, we could not find it. Champaign had grown a lot from 1964 to 1987, and a house that had once been way out in the country was on the outskirts of town when my parents came back. By the time I came back, wherever it was must have already come into Champaign. As near as Don and I can figure, this grassy field may have been the property. The field is next to the used car lot, and Mom says there was a new car lot by the house in 1987. The convenience store is on the other side of the grassy field. I imagine what happened is the house was torn down to make way for the convenience store. What progress!
