A Night of Stars, the telethon for America. Paper piecing is by Gillian Greding. Journaling: “When the announcement came on Friday afternoon for volunteers within Verizon to help man the phones for an unprecedented nationwide telethon to raise funds for the victims of September 11th's tragedy..the call was answered without hesitation. All of Verizon's call centers across the nation were open to take pledge donations for the event. We were asked to wear red, white and blue in show of support, and we came in droves. Right after our work shifts we went home, fed our families and went back to work. The local call center in Oxnard was the place I was to report. The event was very well organized, with patriotic balloons, and a quick training we were given before we were put on line live. We were given a script to follow, and instructions on what to do in case of a bomb threat. The telethon was broadcast from the East coast live, so we were answering calls right away..even though it was not to be broadcast here until 9:00 p.m. I took calls from a college student from Conn., who said she only had $25 to give. There was a midwestern woman who was so distraught, I could tell she just wanted to talk. She put her 6 year old son on the line and he read me a poem he wrote. It moved me to tears. There were so manuy different people I spoke to..like the old Southern granny who said ”child, all I have is $10.“ As time wore on, the calls crept across the nation, people were holding for hours just to get through. I had a number of people disappointed I wasn't a movie star! Finally it was 9 pm here and the overhead tv monitors broadcast the telethon. At one point Celine Dion sang ”God Bless America“ we all stood up and cheered. At the last call..we stood on our chairs and our desks..and cheered like mad. I've never been more proud of my country, my company..and my fellow Americans.”thank you for looking!
