The Lights are On!…as in the Northern Lights. Fairbanks is one of the best locations in the US to view the aurora. So I decide to share a glimpse of some of our land?s beauty on this holiday card. The card is one single layer of paper with many layers of ink. I also made several mask for this card-to protect the background as I separated the stamp?s 3 overlapping trees (Hero Arts), to create the horizon line and the snow banks?and more! Our snow regularly covers the trees with as much snow as the branches can hold. Unfortunately only the green part of the stamp is inked and the snow is the white card base yet all of it needed to be clear emboss so it would resist the background ink colors I would be adding. Luckily I had a Versamark pen and after heat setting the distress ink did not bleed as I clear embossed the entire tree including snow on the branches.Moose are one of our common large animals in this part of Alaska. Occasionally they walk through my yard. After realizing I didn?t have an appropriate sized moose stamp I was very thankful Anna-Karin shared her tutorial on stencil making with us. For I recalled I have a moose punch that I could use to make a stencil. With the stencil, ink, embossing powder and a few lines of ink to plant his feet in the snow and the moose was complete. Big yeah! Now not inky can I make a moose image but I can add him to the paper in either direction! With masks in place I covered the sky area with Memento Summer Sky ink. Then hand sponged in the northern lights with Memento Danube Blue and Grape Jelly inks. To create the snow banks I used the Danube Blue ink sponge without adding more ink. Stamped the Hero Arts sentiment. Thanks to hosts Heidi, Michele and Anna-Karin for your challenges which inspired me to attempt this card for SOF13. I had thought about it several times over the years. Indeed as I imagined this initial card was be very time consuming to gather all the correct tools and supplies and to experiment with what combinations and techniques work best. Now that my supplies are out I may just jump into a few more holiday cards. But I am also thinking about what other shaped punches I have?pumpkins, a turkey, flowers?hmm and more.
