I made these ATCs for Heidi's Stamp N Dash ATC Swap: http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/mb.asp?cmd=display&forum_id=22&thread_id=3281017. [twopeasinabucket.com] Thank you, Heidi!
The task was to use a stamp with a stencil, use water, and stamp. We only needed to make two ATCs–one to keep and one to swap, but I got carried away. At first I didn't care for the splotchy backgrounds so I kept trying to get a smoother image. I finally did make some neater backgrounds, but by then I rather liked the splotchy ones. Go figure.
ATCs 2 1/2“ x 3 1/2” 140-lb. hot-press watercolor paper
I followed Heidi's directions; the details are on the challenge blog: http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/userblogpost.asp?id=74851 [twopeasinabucket.com]
I applied the inks directly to the stencil, sprayed it with water, flipped it over and put it on top of the watercolor paper I had sitting on one paper towel. I put a paper towel over the stencil and pressed down lightly with my hand. When I lifted the stencil off the paper, the image was rather splotchy (# 8 above). I tried using a brayer with similar results. I started getting a smoother image when I used 3 or four paper towels beneath the paper and pressed down lightly with my hand followed by brayering (#1-3 above).
I thought the bird image was a good one to use with a watercolor technique because the image isn't precisely drawn. I stamped and heat embossed it. I purposely over-heated the powder to get rid of the raised glossy look. I wanted the darker image, but I didn't want the gloss. If you do that, you need to keep the heat gun moving and back off to allow the paper to cool so you don't burn the paper.
I used both colors of Distress Inks to shade the edges of the ATCs.
I added a very small flatback rhinestone for the eye and adhesive-backed pearls.
