I attended Michelle Zindorf's Beginners' Workshop on Saturday. It was a terrific class, and I enjoyed it very much. What did I learn? There's a huge difference between brayering a complete piece of cardstock with a single color or with a spectrum pad and using a brayer to color and shade as Michelle does. Huge.

I'm posting my cards, but remember it was a class for beginners. I sat close to Michelle and kept comparing her examples with the card I was working on. I felt disappointed. Finally, the first card was finished, and I realized that it looked pretty good even if it had mistakes on it and the color wasn't as vivid as Michelle's. I finally decided that it was really silly to compare my first efforts with Michelle's. It's going to take a lot of practice to put down as much ink as she does without losing the gradations of shading that she achieves so effortlessly. The nice thing is that Michelle posts detailed tutorials for her cards on her blog, Freedom in Creating, so I have a way to practice the techniques she taught us. She also has tips on her blog for brayering her way. Check out FAQ.

I walked away with some supplies including a brayer and a big set of exclusive stamps from Innovative Stamp Creations plus a second set that I won in a drawing.

Big Tip: You need cardstock that won't absorb the ink so fast that it won't spread and blend. Michelle used SU Whisper White that has a smooth finish. I have some SU ultra-smooth cs that has the same feel so I'm going to try that out. Another possibility is Beckett Expression Radiance from Marco's Paper. CA-Melody told me she tried to use the cs she got at WalMart, and it did not work; it just absorbed the ink as fast as she put it down. Just try out what you have; look for a smooth finsh.

Nora S and CA-Melody took the class after mine so I didn't get to see their cards. Nora told me that all three of Melody's cards turned out great so I hope she'll post them.

Michelle, thank you for a wonderful workshop. I'm going to practice, and I'll be back for your advanced class. Daria
